Character Guide
The game's gacha system is focused on obtaining weapons for your characters alone. All characters in the game are available from the start so you don't need to worry about getting them. However, you will still need to manage their growth and stats.
Character Power
First, let's talk about Power. Each character has his/her own Power rating which is directly affected by their individual stats and equipment. At the same time, their individual power rating is taken into consideration when calculating the party's overall Power. The party's power rating is then used to measure if they'll be able to successfully clear a stage or mode, since each of them will have a recommended power level value. As your individual characters that's part of the party increase their power, so does your party's overall power rating.
Stats
Each character has six stats, as follows:
- HP: Represents the character's HP. When reduced to 0, the character is KO'd.
- PATK: Determines the physical damage dealt
- MATK: Determines the magic damage dealt
- PDEF: Reduces physical damage taken
- MDEF: Reduces magic damage taken
- Heal: Affects the amount of HP restored.
Character stats are affected by their equipment (main weapons, ability weapons, materia, and sub-weapons).
Character Streams
Character Stream is a system where you can unlock nodes for a character and improve their stats and default Limit Break ability. This is also where you can unlock their second Limit Break ability.
You can access the Character Streams screen by tapping the Growth icon on the left side of the screen then tapping Characters. From there, the nodes of the last character you've viewed will appear but if you want to change characters, simply tap the Characters button in the lower-left corner to switch.
Each character has their own respective Streams. Each stream is composed of several interconnected Nodes that you can unlock using consumables called "Character Pieces" (more on that a bit later) while some nodes require the character's Memories (character shards) as well. Nodes are divided into several groups which are level-locked. Once your character reaches the required level, the next group of nodes will become available for unlocking.
For more information about this system, please check out our dedicated Character Stream guide.
Abilities
Command Abilities
Command Abilities or C-Abilities are the special moves that consume ATB when used in battle. A character can have multiple C-abilities; one from the weapon they equipped, and the others based on the materia equipped to them. C-abilities vary per weapon and materia; this also means that characters can only use the abilities they provide when they have them equipped.
Limit Break
This is one of the two powerful signature attacks a character can perform during battle once the Limit Gauge is filled. All characters will have access to their default Limit Breaks. Another Limit Break can be unlocked by completing Stream Missions, which are available in the character's Stream screen. Please refer to our dedicated Character Stream guide for more information.
Once you have unlocked the Summon ability, you can replace the character's Limit Break with it. Take note that only one member of the party can equip a Summon ability at a time.
Reinforcement Abilities
Reinforcement Abilities or R-Abilities are passive abilities that are always in effect. As you level up weapons and uncap them, more R-abilities will be unlocked and strengthen them. These abilities affect and strengthen the effects of the materia they're paired with. While in the character info screen, you can tap on any of the R-abilities available on the character to see which equipment pieces in the current loadout are affecting the total points contributing to each ability. As the point total of r-abilities increase, they level up and become stronger.
Equipment
Characters can equip one main weapon (character-specific), an ability (secondary) weapon, and up to three sub-weapons. Each slot has certain effects towards the user, which we cover in detail in our Weapon System guide. Basically, only the main weapon will be displayed as the actual weapon the character is wielding.
On the other hand, characters also have outfits or battle gear. These outfits also give new R-abilities and/or contribute towards the points total for certain R-abilities. This option also has a Skin system where you can change the appearance of the outfit the character is currently wearing without changing the actual gear.
Leveling Up
Your characters earn EXP by regularly participating in battles or sending them out in Chocobo Expeditions. There's also a reliable method of farming EXP only and that's via Training Quests. You can access this by going to Home > Solo Content > Enhancement Quests > Training Quests. Aside from EXP, you can also find stages where you can find materials needed to unlock nodes in Character Streams.
